The initial waves of US landing craft (seen at the top of this picture) are approaching Engebi Island, part of Eniwetok atoll, on 19 February 1944. The island, still smoking from the pre-invasion US Navy bombardment, was heavily cratered. As was now somewhat standard practice, Marine artillery units were deployed on islands around Engebi prior to its actual invasion to provide supporting fire. (USMC)

Marine Corporal Anthony P. Damato was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his courage during the battle against the Japanese on Engebi Island. When an undetected enemy soldier approached Damato’s fox-hole and threw in a grenade, he covered it with his body to absorb the blast, sacrificing himself to save his comrades. (USMC)
